Ghana: A Beautiful Journey Through the Land of Gold
by Maya Walker | Published on July 12, 2023
Ghana is a place that has been on my bucket list for years. I was always fascinated by its rich history, beautiful landscapes, and vibrant culture. From the moment I stepped off the plane in Accra, I was embraced by the warm breeze, vibrant culture, and friendly smiles of the locals. But as exciting as the journey was,
I quickly realized that being well-prepared made all the difference.
Here are 14 must-have essentials I packed for the trip that ensured a hassle-free and enjoyable experience:
1. Passport & Visa
Without these, there’s no trip! I made sure my passport was valid for at least six months and secured my Ghanaian visa ahead of time.
2. Yellow Fever Vaccination Card
Ghana requires proof of Yellow Fever vaccination upon entry, so I got my shot before traveling.
3. Travel Insurance
Unexpected things can happen! I invested in travel insurance to cover medical emergencies, lost luggage, and trip cancellations.
4. Comfortable Clothes & Light Fabrics
The tropical climate in Ghana can be quite warm, so I packed breathable cotton outfits to stay cool.
5. Power Adapter & Voltage Converter
Ghana uses Type G plugs (like the UK), so I carried an adapter to charge my gadgets without any trouble.
6. Local Currency (Ghanaian Cedis)
Not everywhere accepts credit cards, so I exchanged some US dollars for Ghanaian cedis before arrival.
7. Sunscreen & Bug Spray
The sun in Ghana can be intense, and mosquitoes are common, especially in the evenings. I never left her hotel without these!
8. Portable Wi-Fi or SIM Card
To stay connected, I got a local MTN Ghana SIM card for affordable internet access.
9. Reusable Water Bottle & Electrolytes
Staying hydrated was a priority, especially in the hot weather. I also carried electrolyte tablets to avoid dehydration.
10. Snacks & Lightweight Backpack
For long road trips to Cape Coast or Mole National Park, she packed protein bars and a small bag to carry essentials.
11. Travel Pillow & Eye Mask
The flight to Ghana was long, so a comfortable neck pillow and eye mask made it easier to rest.
12. First Aid Kit & Medications
Basic meds for headaches, stomach issues, and allergies were a lifesaver. I also carried malaria prevention tablets.
13. Camera & Extra Storage
Ghana’s landscapes, markets, and cultural sites were breathtaking! I brought my camera and extra SD cards to capture every moment.
14. A Positive Attitude & Openness to Adventure
Beyond physical items, the best thing I packed was an open heart. I embraced the culture, tried new foods, and made lifelong friends.
